The recent reporting of Multi System Inflammatory Syndrome in children (MIS-C)above 5 years have left experts and researchers fluttered in desperation.Has COVID mutated again to affect the kids in a much more deadly form ? The question raises the alarm in the medical fraternity at a global scale.
While doctors of America are clueless, some wants to believe it to resemble rare Kawasaki disease among kids in these areas. At a present estimate at least 3000 US children are diagnosed with Kawasaki each year.Almost 2-8 in every 100,000 are infected in UK but a recent death of 3 children in New York, one teenager and 2 of them 5 and 7 years old respectively tested positive for COVID led the researchers to speculate on the potential link of lethal corona virus.A 9-year-old boy in France who had earlier tested positive for coronavirus also died due to this particular inflammatory disease. Most of these children were younger and 32 percent were asymptomatic as told by the data provided by the China Centre of Disease Control.
As many as 73 children in New York, and several other reporting in Chicago and New Jersey manifested similar symptoms like that of Kawasaki and Toxic shock syndrome.Toddlers and primary school aged are the worst affected with most of them under the age group of 3-14 years. The condition was first reported by the doctors in Britain, Italy and Spain on April 26th, 2020 later raised the alarm in UK, France and Switzerland.Doctors are opinionated about the cause to be previous infection and delayed immune response to COVID symptoms. Selective investigation revealed that those who tested negative earlier subsequently tested positive to Covid- 19 antibodies later; this however was not confirmatory in all cases.
The doctors warned against fever with combination of either of these symptoms like abdominal pain mimicking appendicitis, confusion, diarrhoea, red eyes, rash, swollen painful extremities with red or peeling skin on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet, difficulty in breathing ,racing heart and chest pain.A continuous high grade fever and swollen blood vessels severely affected gut and major organ system following the acute immune response or cytokinin storm which makes the body go into shock at the same time.
Till date there has been no COVID related Kawasaki disease reported from India. A 13 year old girl from Warje was the youngest to die of corona virus disease in Pune this month. She was severely malnourished and already in co-morbid state affected with megaloblastic anemia and severe sepsis. The incidence rate of Kawasaki is 150 per 100,000 children below 5 years and still remain largely undiagnosed in India with the gender predilection to boys over girls in ration of 1.5 :1.
In what has turn out to be the worst nightmare for parents, the current timeline is a ticking bomb with continuous spike of cases reported globally.
